About this class
Kathryn Bruni-Young (founder of Mindful Strength) is leading this five-week class for people who experience ongoing pain. Each class will be a bit different, but will follow this structure. The first 10-15 minutes will begin with a simple lesson on one element of pain. The group will then move through a 45 minute practice that combines yoga poses with functional movements, basic strength training, and a restorative cool down. Participants are welcome to stay for an additional 15 minutes after the class to chat if they would like. This class is also open to teachers who work with people in pain.
This class will focus on
- Understanding a few key points about pain to learn more about our options and become empowered to make decisions about how we move
- Specific mindful exercises to explore pain
- Breathing techniques that can help calm the nervous system
- Functional strengthening movements that will help build tissue (muscles, bones etc…) capacity
- A range of movements to explore what is possible, some movements will be challenging while others will be restorative
- Personal choice and exploration, this is a non-dogmatic environment
Key points about pain
- Pain is not an accurate representation of tissue damage
- Pain tells us that there is a problem, but it doesn’t tell us what the problem is, where the problem is or how bad it is
- Becoming more discerning about pain is helpful, discernment = more choices
- We don’t have to avoid everything that hurts
- New movements can help us build new experiences and pathways
- Calming things down then building things up helps build capacity even when pain might be present
- We can have pain and still be strong
About Kathryn
Kathryn has completed a nine-month long mentorship with physiotherapist, yoga therapist, and researcher Neil Pearson. She has been interviewing clinicians and researchers on the topic of pain science and the bio-psycho-social model over the last two years and has a keen interest in always learning more about pain and movement. Kathryn arrived at the strength training practice with her own history of chronic pain and found strength training combined with relaxation to be very helpful.
Who is this class for
This class is appropriate for people who can get up and down from the floor unassisted. Classes will be well balanced, and there will be some time spent standing, on hands and knees, and on the floor. Options will be given when possible and participants are welcome to stay after class if they have specific questions about movement adaptations. Kathryn is committed to staying within her scope of practice as a movement teacher and will provide general education and movement practices. If you are seeking personalized exercises for specific conditions, or you are in the acute stages of an injury we recommend you visit a physiotherapist.
